The Cocoa Beach Surf Museum presents "FLORIDA WOMEN OF THE WAVES", an exhibit featuring Florida Female Surfers
from the early days of the 60's, up to and including the newest up and comers in the sport.

This exhibit was originally concieved as a simple display of photographs, but due to the enthusiastic response from the Lady Surfers it grew to include a friday night surf movie (female themed of course), a Saturday morning Ladies Surfing Social, and the Saturday night Exhibit Opening. An impromtu Sunday Surf Session was hosted by the Grabowski family.

The exhibit will be on display at the Museum through fall of 2010. Stop by and learn more about the positive impact Florida's women have made in surfing.

This exhibit truly carries at its heart the concept of presenting surfing from the unique female perspective.
In a first for THE COCOA BEACH SURF MUSEUM the exhibit, and the peripherial events, are managed by an all female curators team; Melody DeCarlo, Sharon Wolfe-Cranston, and Marie Hughes.

In addition to numerous photographs there are newsprint articles, event memorabilia, boards, etc. Biographies provided by many respondents showcase the womens' accomplishments and the depth of experiance and influence they provide the sport/art of surfing, locally and across the globe

The Exhibit Opening was held on Saturday, July 24, from 7 PM to 10 PM at THE COCOA BEACH SURF MUSEUM and included Light refreshments and live music. The Museum is located at 4275 N. Atlantic Ave. Cocoa Beach, FL 32931. It is inside the RON JON Rental Center, directly north of the main RON JON store building. Free parking is plentiful.    mapquest - Cocoa Beach Surf Museum

LADIES SURFING SOCIAL

Too few are the occasions when Surfings Sisterhood gathers, and when they do it is most often for the purpose of competition.
So, THE COCOA BEACH SURF MUSEUM held an informal LADIES SURFING SOCIAL as part of the FLORIDA WOMEN OF THE WAVES events.

The LADIES SURFING SOCIAL provided an opportunity to enjoy the company of our surfing sisters outside of the confines of the competitive environment, where old friendships were renewed, some new ones made, and we were lucky enough to get some waves and go surfing together just for the fun of it (one of those grass-roots things The Museum strives to preserve).

The LADIES SURFING SOCIAL was held on Saturday, July 24, from 9:00 AM to "much later than originally planned" on the beach behind The International Palms Resort in Cocoa Beach. It was a casual gathering of friends and family at the beach with a pleasant crowd of dozens of surfing ladies, of all ages on all types of boards.

SURF MOVIE - DEAR & YONDER

As part of the Women of The Waves exhibit THE COCOA BEACH SURF MUSEUM hosted the central Florida premier of the womens surf movie DEAR & YONDER. Created by Tiffany Campbell and Andria Lessler the movie features a diverse cast of women extending from top professionals to souls surfer, to shaper.

In addition to showing the incredible level of surfing skill achieved by todays women the movie takes a look back at the foundations of where they came from with footage of legends and icons such as Rell Sunn, Linda Benson, and Lisa Andersen.

DEAR & YONDER is an enjoyable watch of some of the best surfing in the world today while providing a deeper view into the womens roots and their place in surfing history.

The COCOA BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY graciously provided the use of their facility (again) for this event. The doors opened at 6:30 PM Friday July 23rd, 2010 and a near capacity crowd enjoyed a fine evenings entertainment. Fresh organic popcorn and beverages were provided by our good friends and long-time Museum supporters SUNSEED COOP.
